Fiction genres/types of fiction books

Students often get confused between non-fiction and fiction books.  An easy way to remember the difference is that fiction is similiar to the Spanish word ficticio  and means something is NOT real.

Within fiction books there are many different types of fiction.  These are called genres and they help us organise fiction into different types of stories.  Just like the world is constantly changing, the world of fiction is changing too and one book can cause a fiction genre to develop and change.  For example,  before the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer  vampires were always evil characters and the idea of a romance with vampires was unheard of but since then,  there has been a divide  within fiction and paranormal fiction has developed.

To make things more confusing,  many books have elements of more than 1 genre however to make things simple we'll only talk about the main fiction genres on the following pages.
